After completing the reading assignment, and reviewing your notes, answer the following question. You may want to also review the examples noted at the end of chapter 6 .
Please complete the following 5 questions the first two of which are short answer. This is a timed quiz, you have fourteen minutes. You will have one attempt at completing the work.
1. Define "deep focus shot" and describe why a Realist filmmaker would be more likely to
use this type of shot.
Your Answer:
The deep focus shot is usually a wide angle lens shot where all the planes are in focus.
The Answer:
Deep focus is a shot in which all visual planes, foreground, midground and background in equal focus.
If all planes are in focus the audience can see actions happening simultaneously and character are able to move from one plane to the next and remain in focus. Thus, there would be no need for a cut. See pgs. 208-209 for the advantages of deep focus.
((I only got 1/2 a point because I forgot to answer And why would a realist use this type of shot))
Question 2
A long shot (LS) is often used at the beginning of a scene as an establishing shot, why?
Your Answer:
The long shot in the beginning of the film introduces us to the scene where we are starting.
In Juno we saw a long shot of her and a chair and it said this is where it all started.
The Answer:
A long shot helps establish where the scene is taking place, who is involved and what they are doing. The full bodies of the characters can be seen often with enough physical detail to allow us to recognize them. pg. 205
Anna's note:
Ida, give a little bit more detail, please. Yes, it introduces to the scene but what is important about that introduction - we see the character(s) in their environment.

Question 3
A telephoto lens in filmmaking may be described as:
a fish eye lens
a normal lens
a short-focal-length lens
a variable focal length lens
Correct! 1 point
A long-focal-length lens X
See page 200.
Question 4
If the horizon (and even the vertical) lines of the set appear skewed or tilted it is an indication what type of camera angle.
a bird’s eye view
a high angle
a low angle
Correct! 1 point
an oblique angle X
An oblique angle is also know as a Dutch angle, or a canted angle. In any case, it is as if a tripod leg is shorter than the others, or the tripod is placed on a slope without leveling it. Therefore , the horizon is tilted. or canted.
None of the above.

Question 5 1 point
____________ is achieved by recording an event at a slower/lower frame rate (12 fps) than is standard (24fps) and then projecting the sequence (playing it back) at the standard frame rate (24fps).
a freeze frame
Correct!
fast motion X 1 point
If the action is recorded at a slower rate it will always appear fast if played back at a normal speed. Think of audio, recorded more slowly let's say over two seconds, pitched down by default, and then played back normally which would only take one second,. The sound and action /sound would mimic high speed chipmunks - faster or pitched up.
kinetic motion
reverse motion
If a shot recorded at half speed 12fps and then played back at 24fps it will take only half as much screen time as it took in real time. pg.226
TOTAL SCORE: 4.5/5
