Question 2

Which of the following demonstrates a violation of the 180 degree rule?

A.) In a dialogue scene two characters stand still facing each other, the camera records shots of both characters solely from the doorway across the room.

B.) In an action scene featuring one car chasing another, two separate shots capture first car A and then car B speeding by the camera. The shots are taken from the same side of the street.

Correct! C.) In an action scene featuring one car chasing another the second car has fallen behind. The camera operator crosses the street to get a second better shot after car A passes and before car B finally catches up.

D.) In an action scene featuring one car chasing another car A unexpectedly does a donut in the middle of the intersection and speeds back toward car B.  The camera operator remains where she is although car B has to swerve to avoid car A and in doing so almost takes out the crew and their equipment.

  E) In an action scene featuring one car chasing another a single shot captures the action. Car

Explanation: A speeds by the camera. The camera operator moves to the center of the road to record A turning a distant corner and then quick moves to the other side of the street as car B passes. The operator moves back to the center line and then the director calls cut on this long take.

A - The camera remains on a single side of the line and thus maintains continuity.

B - The camera remains on a single side of the line and thus maintains continuity.

C - The operator moves to the other side of the street FOR A SECOND SHOT thus crossing the line and breaking continuity.

D -The screen direction of car A changes on camera and thus "makes sense." The camera remains on a single side of the line and thus maintains continuity.

E - The operator moves during the shot, continues to record shoots on the line etc. and thus maintains continuity.

Question 5

In  classical cutting a director will use the master scene technique to best portray the drama of the moment. In making decisions the editor will vary shot type based on the coverage provided while taking into account the 30 degree rule. What is the 30 degree rule and why should it be considered?

Your Answer:

So that something looks well editing and continuous there is the 30 degree rule. where the camera should shift 30 degrees between shot types. This way there is no jerky jump cut type action.

In providing coverage the camera operator will change both shot type and camera angle, for two consecutive shots of the same subject with little variation and thus avoid a jarring affect. In making decisions the editor will choose takes from the coverage that adhere to the 30-degree rule and thus create a smooth transition. "This so-called 30 degree rule states that a camera should shift at least 30 degrees between shot types of the same subject." (pg 303)
